i commented – to myself of course – that the grammys would be a lot better if instead of having current artists sing their top current hits, they should have these people sing really good old songs (and i don’t mean carrie underwood and that fat dude who looks like his name should be calvin <middle name> <other middle name> <last name> the <number between III and IV> singing classic country ballads) like when christina aguilera sang the james brown tune which probably qualified as the highlight of the night even though it wasn’t that good but relative to the rest of the garbage (the young chris brown doing backflips and crumping and ninja-like footwork being a definite exception, it wasn’t garbage) it was pretty good.
anyway, this song by the The Arcade Fire sounds like it was some really good old hit that people sing along to on road trips or when they reminisce about a time they never experienced but totally feel they could have but is actually not. it’s a new song. and it’s good.
it’s so good, i’m linking it twice:
the arcade fire – keep the car running
all 3 of you better listen to this song.
10-4.

(10 second later UPDATE!!!L!:!LL: i actually didn’t comment to myself, i commented to my cousin)

it’s a little irritating when a qualitative analysis of an artist’s work is almost entirely a function of past output; setting up an idealized “golden era,” a reproduction of which is impossible. that being said, when mos def puts out a new album, i think i might suffer from a different kind of interpretive ailment: my loyalty to his art leaves it unquestioned. i take each album as a masterpiece unto itself.
still though, i never stop looking for the next “umi says,” a song which will go down as one of my all time faves (i’d put it on a backtomine or latenighttales compilation if i ever get commissioned to make one). on his latest album, i think i found something that makes me feel the same way ‘umi says’ does, here it is:

forever is only a lifetime

i’ve been struggling with an insatiable appetite for music lately, regardless of genre or reputation or review; sourced mainly from okayplayer, pitchfork, paul irish’s music blog, irc (#chilledbeats on efnet) and a whole bunch of other places that due to their transience i’ve totally forgotten.
i’m even going into the past, digging up releases i never listened to when i probably should have.
like last night, for instance, i was going through some old back to mine and latenightales compilations and stumbled upon ex-skateboarder tommy guerrero’s “another late night” released in 2002. his mixing style totally transforms my recent spout with lee hazlewood-esque melancholy (see air’s recent latenighttales release) into a contentment i can only get through teleportation, prompting me to find out what tommy guerrero’s been doing lately … turns out he released an album this year some time in august called from the soil to the soul full of the funk i expect but with more of a hip-hop feel than i ever remember him dabbling with. how can i say no to an album featuring such song titles as “war no more”, “no guns more glory” and “molotov telegram”?
as much as these two albums make me feel i could just walk outside, shirtless with a corona in hand and a soccer ball at my feet, the sad fact is that my playlist has at least 3 scandinavian albums waiting to be listened to.

here’s some music:
latin playboys – same brown earth (tommy guerrero anotherlatenight mix)
hampton hawes – web (tommy guerrero anotherlatenight mix)
