there were 103 interventions in the affairs of other countries between 1798 and 1895 by american armed forces – a large number of which occurred in the south-eastern hemisphere to counter indigenous uprisings.
and we should get it right, the portuguese and spanish were to the populations in the southern hemisphere what the british and french were to the indigenous peoples of the north. a white oppressor.
and for nearly a century, south america suffered. there was no doubt, the monroe doctrine ruled.
the tides seem to be shifting again.
evo was a coca farmer. hugo is part black and part indian. chiapas shifted mexico city: vicente fox is gone. the sandinistas control nicaragua, this time with international support. similar stories in chile. argentina. brazil.
as a member of a 3rd generation diaspora, the majority of which live in those south and central american countries, i’m glad. 600,000 of us exist and influence south america as former refugees, not as colonizers. chile, el salvador, honduras and belize are our homes away from home.
the people have begun capitalizing on an american attention shift from mesoamerica to mesopotamia. solidarity is winning. the usa is pumping its resources elsewhere. in light of all the victories in south america, we’ve now got a different population suffering under an updated monroe doctrine: PNAC.
what a shitty trade off … but the death of PNAC is on the horizon, there is no doubt in my mind.
trying to excavate my remains from underneath an avalanche of boredem last night, i decided to get in my car and drive a few minutes up north to catch the leonids in bloom. off i went at around a quarter past eleven with a flask of hot chocolate, a pile of blankets and my fishing rod. i decided, at the last minute, to take a detour. instead of driving north towards lake simcoe, i headed east towards lake scugog where i knew i’d find a patch of emptiness to park my car and use its reinforced steel hood as a bed. a couple of days before the new moon and the skies as clear as ever, the light show started almost immediately. every couple of minutes, the corner of my eye would catch a streak across a patch of sky i’d just looked away from. the meteors were teasing me. i’d since stopped casting my lures into the lake and assumed a static lying down position on my hood. that’s when the relative torrential downpour of fireballs started, somewhere around half past midnight. five, six, sometimes ten streaks would jockey for my attention at the same time, my eyes darting from a once empty region to another euphorically. it was beautiful.
the bus was scheduled to arrive in the tunnel at 9.41pm. i waited downstairs where a blinking sign alerts commuters of the bus’ arrival. one blink of the sign later and i made my way to the stairs. two blinks later i was at the top. coinciding with the final step of my ascent was the bus’ ass departing the tunnel. 3 blinks and it was gone! an overwhelming sense of confusion carried me to that edge where i again saw the bus’ ass leave the subway station with the arrogant glow of the 20W LED sign tattooed on the small of its back laughing in my face. the bus had driven right through the station. in a split second my brain calculated the odds of me running that bus down and i made a choice. “GO!”. i’m really really fast, so i took off. i caught it at the next stop no more than 200 yards away. the doors opened, someone climbed on and i arrived almost exactly as the doors were closing. they closed. i pounded on the door. the bitch drove off. i waited in the rain for the next bus.
the only thing that kept me from using my rpg launcher were the innocent people inside. never have i regreted a decision more.
not sure if this makes me retarded, but i was definitely taken aback tonight by what a cd/dvd release party actually is. not that it wasn’t enjoyable. it was. my soulmate, the woman who – by proxy – introduced me to what became my favourite album ever, performed a couple of songs.
i won’t post any tracks from that here.
as a consolation prize though, here’s my 3.86th favourite sade song: Sade – Pearls
